Zinc accelerates healing in lung inflammation

Healing heavy metal

A combination of zinc and pneumonia antibiotics can heal faster than a conventionalanti-inflammatory treatment. The researchers report on a research and treatmentcenter for infectious diseases in Bangladesh. They describe their findings in the journal Lancet (vol. 363, p. 1683).

Zinc boosts the immune system and can help prevent pneumonia. Whether zinc also has a healing effect, now under investigation W. Abdullah Brooks and hiscolleagues at the International Center for Diarrhoeal Diseases in Bangladesh (ICDDR). Half of 270 suffering from severe pneumonia in children aged between two and 23 months received conventional antibiotics, the other half of an additionaldose of 20 milligrams of zinc per day.

With a combination of antibiotics and zinc, the children were on average one day earlier and were healthy one day are discharged earlier from hospital. In addition, the zinc treatment was well tolerated. A daily dose of zinc is 15 U.S. cents a day in the hospital, but 25 dollars. Through a combination treatment could therefore besignificant cost savings, says Brooks. "In addition, the zinc treatment could preventantibiotic resistance, since patients must receive less zinc due to variousantibiotics." Pneumonia is the most common disease and death among childrenunder five.
